Absorbency
The ability of a fabric to take in moisture. Absorbency
is a very important property, which affects many other characteristics such
as skin comfort, static build-up, shrinkage, stain removal, water repellency,
and wrinkle recovery.
Acetate
A manufactured fiber formed by compound of cellulose,
refined from cotton linters and/or wood pulp, and acetic acid that has been
extruded through a spinneret and then hardened.
Acrylic
A manufactured fiber derived from polyacrylonitrile. Its major properties
include a soft, wool-like hand, machine washable and dryable, excellent
color retention. Solution-dyed versions have excellent resistance to sunlight
and chlorine degradation.
Airjet yarn
Cotton and polyester garments which provide for a virtually "pill free"
look, wash after wash.
Allen Solley placket
A one-piece placket that’s hidden after being sewn. This process utilizes
the existing fabric for the outside placket face. This is an upscale placket
type.
Alpaca
A natural hair fiber obtained from the Alpaca sheep, a domesticated member
of the llama family. The fiber is most commonly used in fabrics made into
dresses, suits, coats, and sweaters.
Angora
The hair of the Angora goat. Also known as Angora mohair. Angora may also
apply to the fur of the Angora rabbit. However, according to the U.S. Federal
Trade Commission, any apparel containing Angora rabbit hair must be labeled
as "Angora rabbit hair" on the garment.
Appliqué
1) Decoration or trimming cut from one piece of fabric and stitched to another,
usually with a satin stitch, to add dimension and texture. If the appliqué
occupies a significant amount of the design, the stitch count can be reduced.
2) In Schiffli embroidery, an embroidered motif is usually cut away from
the base fabric and then stitched onto the finished product.
Arm Machine
An embroidery machine that has an arm or cylinder that the hook and bobbin
are mounted into. Allows the use of special frames for embroidering caps,
socks, inside pockets, etc. The cylinder-shaped arm allows goods to curve
around the cylinder for embroidery.
Automatic Color Change
The ability of a multi-needle embroidery machine to follow a command to
change to another specified needle with a different color thread in it.
Many embroidery heads have as many as twelve needles allowing the digitizer
to program the use of ten different thread colors without stopping the machine.
Award jacket
A baseball-style jacket with contrasting striped trim.
